Abstract:

Seven handwritten letters and notes (9 p.), two on letterhead stationery of Miller, concerning a variety of topics. One letterhead, titled "Joaquin Miller Lecture Season, 1900-1901", has a lithograph reproduction of Miller's home and the caption "The Hights in Oakland, Cal." with a line for the date, and a similar reproduction on the verso titled "Joaquin Miller At Different Ages" consisting of five numbered sitting portrait photographs of Miller surrounding a larger sixth one in the center of the page of him on horseback with a large mountain in the background. Also includes typescript transcript of one of the letters (Oct. 2, 1871), signed "Paul" and written on fictitious letterhead stationery of Adolph Hitler in Buenos Aires (Argentina)

Born Cincinnatus Heine (or Hiner) Miller on September 8, 1837, near Liberty, Indiana. In 1852, his family moved to the Oregon Territory and two years later at the age of 17 he went to the California gold fields. At the urging of Ina D. Coolbrith, he changed his name to Joaquin Miller sometime around 1870.
